Annual outlook

  • Converged device shipments (smart phones and wireless handhelds) rose 60% to hit 115 million in 2007
  • Shipments of handhelds fell 47% to 3.0 million, from 5.6 million in 2006
  • APAC is the largest region by volume – 47.9 million units in 2007, ahead of EMEA at 45.9 million
  • North America is growing fast – shipments doubled to 20.9 million, from 10.3 million in 2006
  • Nokia remained global market leader, shipping 60.5 million smart phones
  • RIM shipments grew 112% year-on-year to 12.2 million, strengthening its second place position
  • By OS provider, Symbian leads on 67% share, followed by Microsoft on 13%, with RIM on 10%.

Q4 2007 outlook: converged devices

  • Converged device shipments rose 72% year-on-year in Q4 2007, the highest growth seen all year
  • Nokia and RIM retained their number one and two positions
  • Apple with its iPhone achieved third place worldwide despite its limited geographic coverage, with 7% share. But Apple is number 2 in the US market!
  • APAC converged device shipments rose 23%, EMEA 79%, and North America 222%
  • Symbian leads with 65% share, ahead of Microsoft on 12%, RIM on 11%, Apple on 7%, and Linux at 5%

Q3 2007 outlook: Symbian maintains its market share while Apple iPhone already overtakes Windows Mobile

Open OS market is dominated by the Symbian OS, which maintains its representation at 72% of the open OS-based handset shipments by Q3 2007.

Apple, for the first iPhone full quarter of sales, has already overtaken all Microsoft’s Windows Mobile smartphones in the USA. That puts the iPhone at the second rank — ahead of smartphones running Symbian, Linux, and the Palm OS but after the first one: RIM's BlackBerry. NPD credits the iPhone a 27% market share at the retail sales!

Q3 2006 handset base

Open OS market is dominated by the Symbian OS, which represents 72% of the open OS-based handset shipments by Q3 2006.
The Open OS market increased by 47% over Q3 2005 to reach 50.8 units sold by Q3 2006.
Despite this good progression, Open OS shipments represents only 6.8 % of the global mobile market in volume.

Symbian dominates the Open OS market

With 72% of the Open OS market, Symbian represents:
  • 37 million Symbian smartphone shipments in 2006
  • Over 100 Symbian smartphone models shipping by 10 licensees
  • New Symbian smartphone models commenced shipping, including the Nokia E62 in the US, Nokia 5500 Sport and SEMC P990 in Europe as well as NTT DoCoMo's 7 Series in Japan
  • 6,120 third party applications for Symbian smartphones are commercially available, up 39% from Q3 2005

Linux remains stable

It sells pretty much the same amount of units when compared to Q3 2005.

Windows Mobile boosts its market share by nearly 2.5 times

Which puts Microsoft platform at rank 3 with a 5.6% of market penetration.

Palm slashes the number of units sold by 2

And continues its decline down to a market share of 1.8%.
